Dyson Hot + Cool Jet Focus AM09 Review

To determine which space heater is truly the best, we bought and tested all of the top-ranked models in order to give them a true side-by-side comparison. After weeks of testing, it became clear that the Dyson Hot + Cold Jet Focus AM09 is the best choice when it comes to awesome features and convenience. It looks great, it has a remote that magnetically attaches to the heater, and it has settings to either channel the flow of air or have it be more widely dispersed.

Performance Comparison

Personal Heat

We split the score for this metric into two parts — operating under a desk and operating in a living room setting. For the desk portion, we first measured the dimensions of each model then we objectively judged the performance of the devices underneath a multitude of desks in various real-world offices. For the living room assessment, we ran the heaters 5 feet away from several types of furniture in half a dozen living rooms with varying cubic volumes.

When we used the Dyson Jet Focus under a desk we had mixed feelings. It has a small footprint which is great, but it takes a bit longer to heat up than most of the other models that we have tested.

However, we were impressed with its performance when using it in the near vicinity of a piece of furniture. The airflow is strong and noticeable at 5 feet away, and you can feel it on your whole body — some of the other models we've tested seem to concentrate the heat either on your legs or on your torso rather than both.

Convenience

In order to score this metric, we meticulously inspected each device side by side to search for the tiniest details that might set one model apart from the others. There are several elements to the Dyson's design that makes it very convenient and easy to use.

The Dyson Hot + Cold Jet Focus AM09 has an innovative tilt function that allows for the air to be directed either higher or lower depending on the user's needs.

This model also comes with an oscillation setting that disperses air throughout the area more evenly than static models. As an added safety feature, the Dyson has an internal sensor that shuts the power off if the device gets knocked over.

This heater has a specialized setting to select between a more diffused airflow or a more focused one. This helps make the heater more versatile as it can be used to distribute air throughout a room or it can be channeled directly at a person or object. The digital display on the Dyson only illuminates while the device is powered on, adding to its style and allure.

The timer on this model has a variety of settings — it can be set in increments of 15 minutes up to the first hour, then it increases to 1-hour increments that go all the way up to 9 hours.

The remote control included with the Jet Focus AM09 is simple and has intuitive buttons and symbols, and it attaches to the top of the heater body magnetically so it will always have a home. However, it should be noted that if you misplace the remote this model loses many of its capabilities including the air focus, oscillation, and timer functions.

Small Room

Next, we wanted to see how well each model could heat a small room or office. We began with the temperature of our 161 square foot room at 64.5 degrees Fahrenheit, the adjacent room temperature of 71 degrees, and an outside temperature of 36 degrees. To measure the heating capabilities of the Dyson we cranked it up to full blast, then checked the room temperature every 20 minutes for a total period of 1 hour.

The Dyson Hot + Cold did fairly well during the testing process for this assessment. After an hour this model was able to raise the room temperature from 64.5 up to 76.6 degrees for a total of 12.1 degrees of change. Where the Dyson really stood out is that it brought the temperature up 7.8 degrees in the first 20 minutes alone.

Power Consumption

For our final assessment, we used an inline wattmeter to determine the number of kilowatts that each space heater uses per hour. We were then able to use the national average price of kilowatts per hour, or kWh, to calculate projected costs to run the heaters per hour, over a 10 hour period, a 24 hour period and so on.

The Jet Focus AM09 produced great results during this experiment. At a cost of 13.17 cents per kWh this heater costs $1.65 to operate for 10 hours which translates to less than $50 to run it at full power for 10 hours per day for 30 days.

Value

There's no way around it — the Dyson Hot + Cool Jet Focus AM09 is expensive. However, it offers top of the line features from a trusted name. Also, depending on your power source and costs it could pay for itself over time due to its higher level efficiency than most other models.
