Our Verdict

The Mophie Powerstation XXL 20000 is among the more sizable portable batteries we've examined, but its large stature comes with the assurance that you can recharge most smartphones several times and even power up a tablet once or twice. Additionally, this model distinguishes itself by adhering to the latest USB charging standard, USB power delivery (USB PD). This feature enables it to charge high-power devices, such as the newest MacBooks, drones, or the Nintendo Switch, at a much faster pace than standard USB chargers. However, this battery comes with a hefty price tag and is one of the largest and heaviest we have tested, making it more of a specialty charging device. But if you don't need to carry your charger in your pocket but do need extra juice, the Powerstation XXL is an excellent choice. Our Analysis and Test Results

The Mophie Powerstation XXL 20000 is an impressive piece of technology, a battery pack that packs a punch in terms of power delivery. However, its vast capacity is balanced by a significantly large footprint in both size and weight. Compared to many other products on the market, it is more cumbersome to carry around, and falls short in terms of integrated convenience features.

Charging Efficiency

The next metric on our agenda was the actual electrical capacity of each battery, a factor which is responsible for 25% of the overall score. The Powerstation XXL, boasting a rated capacity of 20,000mAh, stood its ground well in our resistive load tests, managing to deliver about 83% of the stated capacity.

Mophie proudly claims that this battery pack can charge an iPhone 8 up to 7 times and for other models, such as the Samsung S8 up to 4.5 times. In our rigorous testing environment, the Powerstation XXL exceeded this claim, successfully charging an iPhone 13 Pro Max more than 4.5 times before being fully depleted.

Added Convenience

For the next part of our assessment, we looked at additional features that these products might offer to enhance user convenience.

The Powerstation XXL can charge multiple devices simultaneously, thanks to its pair of USB-A ports and its USB-C PD port. However, it doesn't have an integrated flashlight or built-in wall plug or cables, which some users might be wanting for enhanced convenience.

Portability

Our assessment started by examining the portability of each portable battery pack. In this category, the Powerstation XXL's size and weight raised some challenges, making it a less pocket-friendly device. Despite this, it's important to note that portability accounts for just one portion of the overall score.

The Powerstation XXL is among the most substantial battery packs in the group, measuring approximately 6.1 inches in length, slightly over 3.1 inches in width, and about an inch thick.

It tips the scale at almost a full pound, making it quite noticeable in a pocket and rather uncomfortable to carry in this way. It's a device that seems more suited to being stashed in a backpack or tote bag instead of being slipped into a pocket.

Recharge Time

Our final evaluation metric dealt with the time it takes for these portable battery packs to recharge. This may seem like a less significant feature, but it still contributes to the overall user experience.

The Powerstation XXL managed to prove its mettle even in this regard. Despite its large capacity, it exhibited a competitive recharge time, particularly when using the included PD charging wall brick, which allows it to be fully recharged in just over four hours.

Should You Buy the Mophie Powerstation XXL 20000?

When we draw together all of our observations and findings, it becomes clear that the Powerstation XXL is an excellent choice for those who need multiple charges for their devices or have high-power devices to charge. It offers the capacity to support significant power needs, and its recharge rate is impressive. However, if your needs are more modest, such as seeking a simple backup for your phone, the Powerstation XXL might be overkill. For those with larger devices, like a MacBook, or the need to charge multiple tablets simultaneously, this battery from Mophie is one of our top recommendations.

What Other Portable Chargers Should You Consider?

If the high-capacity PD (power delivery) capabilities of the Powerstation XXL seem excessive for your needs, or you're seeking something more affordable and less bulky, the INIU Portable Charger 10000 could be a viable alternative. Another excellent option is the TG90° 10000mAh with AC Wall Plug, which includes three types of cords, an integrated wall charger, and offers versatility in charging options.
