Our Analysis and Test Results
Finishing at the top of the overall pack, the Editors' Choice award winner — the FoodSaver V2244 narrowly edged out the NutriChef PKVS18BK for the top spot. Both of these products do extremely well with delicate foods and are about equally convenient to operate, but the sealing performance of the V2244 is just a bit better than the NutriChef. However, the overall suction power of the NutriChef is a bit better and it usually retails for about $40 less, earning it the Best Buy Award
To figure out which vacuum sealer is actually the best you can get, we did tons and tons of research, then picked out the products that showed the most promise based on manufacturer's specifications, popularity, and other user experiences. We then bought them all and compared their performance side-by-side in four weighted rating metrics, with the FoodSaver's results outlined below.
Responsible for the largest component of the overall score for each kitchen appliance, our sealing performance metric accounts for 40% of the points for each product. We compared how fast each of these products can seal different types of food, the seal strength, and if you can manually seal a bag without a drop in vacuum, as well as how many bags you can seal successively without a drop in performance. The V2244 by FoodSaver did very well, meriting a 7 out of 10 and comparing extremely favorably with the rest of the products in the review.
The FoodSaver V2244 got off to a great start in our volume test, delivering one of the best performances out of the entire group. This appliance was able to vacuum and seal 21 bags with one cup of rice in them before we noticed a drop in performance - much higher than the average of 10 bags before requiring a brief pause.
We also particularly liked that this appliance maintained the same pressure level when we went to manually seal it — neither letting in air or continuing to pull a stronger vacuum in the bag. The V2244 also makes a fairly strong seal that is slightly thicker than average — about 2.5 mm.
Unfortunately, this vacuum sealer from FoodSaver is a bit on the slower side, taking longer than average to seal in 3 out of 4 of our food test. It was right on the average time when tasked with sealing four pieces of white bread, but took a bit longer than average in our rice, ground beef, and sausage tests.
Following our sealing performance metric, our round of convenience tests came next in terms of importance, constituting 30% of the final score for each vacuum sealer. For this metric, we ranked and scored each model on how easy it is to clean, if there is built-in storage for bags and an easy way to cut them, the interface, and if there are any other sealing accessories, as well as the overall size and weight of each machine. The FoodSaver earned a 6 out of 10 for its slightly above average showing.
This kitchen appliance is about average in terms of size when it comes to these products, but did earn some points by being particularly lightweight, only weighing in at 3.4 lbs.
We also really liked that this product has a locking lid, so you don't have to hold it tight the entire time it is vacuuming and sealing and includes a pump attachment for vacuum sealing in certain types of containers.
The interface for the V2244 is quite intuitive and responsive, using actual push buttons rather than touchscreen pads.
This kitchen appliance also has a removable cleaning tray, making it much easier to clean up if you accidentally suck some of the liquid out of the bag while you are sealing something. Unfortunately, this products does not have any sort of integrated bag storage system or a dedicated way to cleanly cut bags.
Responsible for 20% of the final score for the V2244, our delicate foods metric tested out how well these products handled food that is easily squishable. We graded each appliance on how easy it is to pulse the amount of vacuum and if we were able to successfully seal two slices of white bread without crushing them beyond recognition. The FoodSaver V2244 delivered an absolutely phenomenal performance, meriting an 8 out of 10 and putting it right at the top of the group.
This vacuum sealer did very well at sealing the two slices of bread without completely squishing them. It does briefly continue vacuum for a slight second after you hit the button to stop it, so the bread was just a tiny bit squished, but you could definitely anticipate this and perfectly seal the bread with a little practice.
We also really liked that it is super easy to start or stop the vacuum and creep up on the perfect amount, simply by hitting the "Vac/Seal" button to start and stop the pump.
For the remaining 10% of the total score, we quantified and scored the amount of suction power each of these sealing machines has, using a vacuum gauge. The V2244 finished out with an alright showing, earning a 5 out of 10.
This product was able to pull a vacuum that measured 15.1 inches of mercury on our gauge.
Overall, the FoodSaver V2244 is a decent value. It's a little more expensive than some of the more budget options, but not by much, and it is the best of the best when it comes to these vacuum sealing.
If you are looking for a vacuum sealer that is truly the best of the best, then you should definitely check out the V2244. It's our absolute favorite and the best of these products that we have seen so far.
