Magic Mill Food Dehydrator Review
Pros: Metal trays, easy clean-up, digital interface
Cons: Temperature settings in 10 minute increments, inaccurate on high heat settings
Manufacturer: Magic Mill
Our Analysis and Test Results
The Magic Mill lives up to its name by pumping out high-quality dehydrated foods in a minimum amount of space. The modern digital interface is intuitive, the fan is quiet, the transparent door practical and the metal tray easy to clean. We think that most home cooks will find this machine to be the right size at the right price.
Quality and Consistency
What's the value in a dehydrator if the jerky or fruit leather coming out of the machine isn't to your liking? The foods that we produce with no previous experience with the Magic Mill were mouth-watering and eyebrow-raising. The fruit leather dried quickly and with minimal lingering wet spots. The results were uniform and delicious snacks. Similarly, the fresh herbs and tomatoes we dried maintained full flavor without being chewy or crisp, though the toms were a little squishy in places.
Easy to Use and Accurate
The Magic Mill employs a digital interface with the following control setting: start/stop, time/temp, keep warm, fast/raw, and +/- buttons. Despite the temperature setting being in 10-degree steps, the controls are easy and intuitive to use. In our temperature accuracy tests, we found that the unit was spot on at the low end and up to 10 degrees below the desired temperature at the highest settings. Aside from that, we had little to complain about except that we found the alert tone to be unnecessarily loud and persistent.
The floor of this model is smooth and without too many features like inside corners and grooves. Thus, it was easy for us to wipe the interior out no matter how sticky the food drippings. We favor models with metal trays over plastic as they are more durable and without concerns of chemical contamination, however other models are hard to clean. Not so with the Magic MIll. These trays cleaned-up without soaking or significant scrubbing. They are also dishwasher safe, so one can forego the sink altogether.
Every once in a while a product is priced just right. The Magic Mill falls into this category as it performs at the highest level, it's easy to use, it's built to last, and it looks good on a countertop to boot. So, while you're not getting a killer deal on this machine, you can rest assured that you are getting your money's worth.
Hands down, the Magic Mill is the best mid-size dehydrator. From its sharp-looking exterior to its durable trays to its easy to operate controls, this machine is built to impress. Add to these accolades a reasonable sticker price and you can be certain that this unit renders the best results with the least amount of fuss.
