The eponymous Amazon Basics Stainless Steel 1.7L is a one-setting electric kettle that will satisfy all but the high-end tea and coffee crowd. The device looks nice on the countertop with other appliances, and it has an all-metal reservoir. It reaches a boil in a respectable amount of time, and it has an automatic shut-off. What more does the average hot drink consumer need? On top of all that, this kettle is priced to move with a level of functionality — and style — that will satisfy all but the most discerning user.Editor's Note: The AmazonBasic kettle review, undated on January 19, 2022, now offers more in-depth information on tests and which products we recommend, and why.

Our Analysis and Test Results
This pitcher-style kettle is basic, affordable, and has a stylish design. However, it only has one setting — boil — so it's a bit of a one-trick pony. That said, it boils water at a decent rate, so its one trick is a good one. Additionally, it has an automatic shut-off feature, which can be a pro or con depending on your needs. All in all, this basic machine is a good fit for general use hot drink consumers.
Pour Over Ability
The Amazon Basics is a pitcher-style kettle and thus is not a tremendous pouring machine. What do we mean by good and bad pouring? Slow pouring is the domain of craft coffee folks, as proper extraction (a.k.a. brewing) requires an exact pouring duration and volume. A slow, steady, and balanced pour and flow rate are what detailed extraction is all about. But controlled discharge is not where pitcher-style kettles like this one shine. If you tried to use this kettle for a high-quality pour-over, you'd find it clumsy and overly sloppy. That said, the handle design of this kettle is well-designed, making pouring easier than others of the same style.
The Amazon Basics kettle boils 4 cups of water in 5 minutes and 2 seconds — about average for the class. At our lab's elevation, water boils at ~201ºF so that this interval will be a bit longer for those of you closer to sea level. For consistency, we ran all boil tests with 57ºF tap water.
If there's one place where a larger pitcher-style kettle excels, it's here. The spout is wide, and the handle is comfortable, easily facilitating a super fast pour. If your primary go-to for hot drinks is a giant cup of tea with a basic tea bag, and you don't need any sort of nuanced temperature control, this is a great choice.

The lid on this kettle is permanently attached and angled slightly, leaving a ~2-inch opening to fill from. This design is fine, but it isn't the easiest compared to other kettles in our review. The filter pokes out slightly though not really enough to get in your way. Still, not removing the lid entirely is a small nuisance.
Should You Buy the Amazon Basics Stainless Steel 1.7L?
Given this kettle's consistent performance and low price, we find it a good value. However, this assessment only holds if the model meets your needs. This is a general use machine and, as such, will meet the needs of the general user. If you need a higher-end kettle that controls temperature and pours more smoothly, this is not the product for you. As the name implies, the Amazon Basics Stainless Steel 1.7L kettle is a basic machine. Still, it has a sharp look worthy of the countertop real estate it will take up. More importantly, it boils at a respectable rate and has an amply-sized water reservoir. All in all, this is more than enough kettle for most people's needs, and it comes at a very reasonable price.
What Other Electric Kettles Should You Consider?
If you'd like something more than a basic water heating machine, then the AmazonBasic is unlikely to meet your needs. If you are looking for the perfect pour-over, the Fellow Stagg EKG is the one you'll love. If you are looking for an option that splits the difference, then the high scoring Bonavita 1.7L Variable is the bright spot in a group of similar products.
